Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) can be broken down into two main disease categories – Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. Both Crohn’s Disease and UC are chronic inflammatory diseases of the digestive system. There is no cure of IBD, but there are treatments available that can address symptoms and help to achieve remission.
Crohn’s can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus, and also can be found throughout the entire thickness of the tissues. Ulcerative Colitis is restricted to the top layer of the lining of the colon.
Symptoms include: blood in the stool, fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain and non-digestive symptoms such as rashes, weight loss and even delayed puberty.
IBD can be diagnosed in both adolescents and adults. If you suspect you or your child is suffering from IBD it is important to seek the help of a specially trained gastroenterologist. Treatments are available and your ADH physician can tailor a treatment to meet your individual needs.
